Dream Within a Dream

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now
Thus much let me avow:
You are not wrong who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day
In a vision, or in none
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand–
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep
While I weep–while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?

O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream? ~ Edgar Allen Poe

I chose this Edgar Allen Poe poem specifically because I feel like it fits into the topic of today’s blog rather well. In the poem the narrator is saying goodbye permanently to someone he loves dearly. In the poem something has taken away his hope for the future, causing him to no longer dream or have hope. The “surf tormented shore” is a metaphor for life because life is unpredictable and often filled with chaos where we can only stand by because we can’t orchestrate our lives, we can only live them. As he watches the grains of sand (his happy memories) being swept away by the relentless tide all of his dreams of happiness flees with them. Kind of heavy, yeah, but then so is Internet bullying and frankly, I am sick of reading or hearing about people being bullied on social media websites.

We all have the ability to become trolls if we choose to, but most of us don’t. So what makes these sick individuals act this way? Sure, they can now bombard people with abuse whilst hiding behind their computer screens like the cowards that they are but what makes them WANT to? The internet is a gigantic mass of information, accessible to anyone at any time. Unfortunately this means the power is now in the hands of good people and bad. The morally corrupt have just as much access as the morally sound and they tend to use it to beget more nastiness. The unfortunate thing is no one seems to be taking responsibility in regulating the trolls. Sure, I get it, you’re just exorcising your right to freedom of speech, but on the flip side, don’t people also have the right to go online and not be abused?

Take from? We have this massive, exhilarating virtually connected world that can be used to spread so much hope and knowledge if used for good. Unfortunately, our online world is evolving so quickly that the banks are overflowing beyond the scope of its current rules and regulations. Until some system is in place to safeguard the victims, families will continue to be devastated by the pointless loss of these children who choose to escape by taking their own lives. How do we help? Stand up and stand in, find the means to moderate these trolls, and take the time to educate the victims. Because you may be just a drop of water in the bucket, but when placed with the other drops of the morally sound, you might have just enough drops to drown out these grotesque trolls. Just something to ponder on this Hump Day.

  1. Fierce, passionate, heartfelt and may the message reverberate through keyboards and monitors everywhere…until it rings loud and true; a resounding crescendo in our collective consciousness. Bravo!
Your inimitable styling is, once again, a perfect portrait…evocative of the mood behind the muse.
I don’t say it often…but I mean it no less…you are a blessing in this big, crazy, beautifully flawed world.
    Namaste
