The quote is so sad, and yet so true. I think style is something in ones genetic makeup, you either have it or you do not. It is noted in a person who just has a natural knack for colors, materials, and the positive way of mixing them together but, in others, they just never seem to “get it right” or, at the least, like me, have to dig deep, and work harder to get there. I think in its base sense it is controlled by whether you are prone to thinking with the left or the right side of the brain. The wonderful thing about the brain though is the fact that you DO indeed have both sides. And you can use the influence of either side with practice.

I wasn’t going to say anything, but I’ve been told a couple of times, I need to offer more guidance to beginning models, so I will. I recently judged something with the theme of “Cubism” and though I know it is a difficult to interpret subject, I went away more than a little disappointed. Cubism at the most basic is to take a natural form and fragment it into something abstract. Period. How do I know? I researched it, I researched the words, I researched images. Took maybe 5 minutes to figure where I would have gone with this theme.

You get out of your Second Life Modeling career, exactly what you put into it. So if what you strive to do is lead, and create something bigger than yourself, in a virtual sense, the first step is always, stop and think. Where do I want to end up, how do I get there? period. Start with a concept, build the steps to how to succeed. It’s not like these “themes” happen every day, so when you DO have them, take a little time to get it right. I’m not talking about the pics of a blog, sure, like my pics here, the stylings need to be simple, because you are bringing a set item(s) to the attention of the viewer. I am only speaking of the mix and match theme projects we get asked to do for mags, or contests, or, like in the above “cubism”, a casting or class graduation.

As an example, the winter elf from yesterday. I created a look, and sent a pic to Skip, so he would know what was coming. I hate to show it, but here it is: Link: But then, I sat back, thought, what a load of crap. So I did it right, where do I want to end up, what do I want this winter elf to look like? How do I get there? And then went about putting the elements together, in what I hope was a more pleasing way. And yes, sometimes, it takes time. But why bother, if you aren’t going to give it your best? Jumps off Soap Box.

YAY! And the take from, there always is one. Don’t be a hater because someone always seems to be styled perfect all the time, they actually can’t help the way they are anymore than you can, its genetics. Use their styles to learn, network and learn from them WHY they put certain aspects of their styles together that way. And really, there is no penalty for researching the style you want to create, especially on theme based castings. Sometimes, even when I don’t have a theme to style, I research and pull from the Internet pics I like, styles I like, items that catch the eye, or “things to try” and pull them aside. Just ask Skip, sometimes I send him four or five pics with a “do you want to do any of these?” before I style. It’s okay to borrow imagination, just add your own flourish to it.

I know, this is a long one. I hope you read parts of it and took out what you wanted. If its all rubbish, then I am sorry to have wasted your time, but I hope, for at least a few of you, it was a help. I just want to leave you with the words of Coco Chanel. “In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” For a taxi to L’Accessoire’s just click on their logo found on the right side of the page. See? right side rather creatively has made it easier for you to get there from here.

L’accessoires is having another of their, *ahem, events. As a Second Life model, I have to admit, one of my fave things is those contests where you have to create a new style by mixing and matching items. I typically find it to be a fun challenge that is much more exciting than wearing off the rack and submitting a picture for a contest. This is one of the reasons I run to these events that are all around the grid. It’s amazing the looks you can create from just one random object you happen to find. (I’ll show a little more of this next week) This event in particular seems to have a ton of really cool random items! I won’t say more, as I said a few days ago, I am just picture blogging this week, so here are some of the treasured finds I picked up last week at L’Accessoires. I mean, whats not to love, right? It’s all about shoos, bags, hats and any other items that can be termed accessory. I’m hoping next round they add a few fellers to the inventory, thats one of the best accessory’s I think. YAY! I hope you check them out and find yourself some extra inventory too. I love this place so much the SLURL was given a permanent place on my “Last Known SLURLS” page.

Think.Believe.Achieve.

Think.Believe.Achieve.

Moving kind of slow, which is typical after a perfect weekend, but I wanted to mention a new store, L’accessoires. Love em or hate em, a good model always needs accessories to kick their look up a notch. It’s what separates the cleverly devised from the blandly ho-hum. And just because you throw a hat, or necklace or earrings on, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best choice for the outfit. So next time you need to style to the nines for an event, play dress up. Cycle through several shoe, jewelry, or any other accessories, don’t just run to the old fave, you will be surprised how finding the perfect accessory can create the perfect appearance.

Think.Believe.Achieve.

And luckily, for the time constrained models like me, L’accessoires has opened its door. I popped in last week and within 5 minutes purchased a top, three hats, a pair of bangles and sunglasses. Done and run, it doesn’t get any better than that. For more information, I fudgied the information from my dear friend and fellow model, MeiMei Shui’s blog and included it below. I had so much fun at the shop, I included the taxi for you! Enjoy! Taxi:

Fade.To.Black.

Fade.To.Black.

Well, I find myself in black again. Depressed? No Way! Color is such an integral part of fashion, bright happy colors, subtle hues, dark somber shades, they all create an aura, a feel for whatever a model is trying to express, since we really can show no true emotion in Second Life without the use of words, our choice of colors speak for us. But, very similar to real life, even as an avatar, there are some colors you personally should always stay away from. Like the real life information here: Link: your inworld skin has the same limits and limitations to what looks “good” on you and I say, find your “power” color and wear it whenever you have an important contest, meeting or event, because your power color is very important and very custom to YOU. As an example, a color I rarely wear because I look so “washed out” is white. I am a winter, so as much as possible I avoid this color, the only time I play with it is when I want to do a “fade” picture, where being washed out is the goal, but even then I typically change my skin tone from an “olay” tone to a “tan” tone.

Fade.To.Black.

How do you find this “magical” power color that defines you? Well there are many ways, but the simplest, and cheapest (free) way is to create a prim the length of your body from feet to just under your chin, thin as plywood or poster board, as wide as your body, and while keeping the board in edit mode, on the texture tab, flick through the different colors. Turn your graphics up for best response and you will be amazed how the changes of colors reflect differently with your skin tone. Some of my favorite colors, colors I would love to wear, are down right scary on me! My sister Seddy purchased the dress in this picture for me, and I instantly fell in love, so I have to thank her for this concept. The playful little cocktail, “Earny” was created by Amutey Decuir of Bliss Couture. It is delightfully frilly, sexily laced and perfect for any semi-formal event! (see below for further credits).

Fade.To.Black.

This final picture, the first and third were created by my friend and artist extraordinaire, Skip Staheli. He is such a long time friend and wonderful inspiration to me, I just love him so! Here is his Link: check out all the outstanding work he has done in Second Life. For this pic, I am wearing gorgeous silk pants from Glam Affair, Baiastices mesh bikini top in black, the back brooch from Miamai’s “Demi” gown, and Donna Flora earrings give the entire ensemble a remarkable retro-glam appeal to the picture.

Earring: Donna Flora
Hairs: Tuty

“The fashionable woman wears clothes. The clothes don’t wear her.” ~ Mary Quant

“The fashionable woman wears clothes. The clothes don't wear her.” ~ Mary Quant

There are a few designers on the grid who you know always, consistently create incredibly well made outfits. You know when you unpack the bag, the outfit is going to be very much like what you saw on the vendor. Amutey Decuir is just such a designer, she is creative, she is smart and she knows how to design for every avatar. One of the best things about Bliss Couture is it is one of those one stop shop places that really work well for people like me with little time to spend dawdling over a day of shopping. You know the kind of store, the kind where there is just about everything you could need? You can throw jeans and furs in the bag with your gown and party wear, throw in some hairs and hats and say done. But convenience aside, the clothes are always simply divine and perfect when worn.

In this first picture, I did what I like to call a “5 Minute Throw Down” where you give yourself 5 minutes to run through the store and grab items to blog. The point is to not think about it, but just snatch and grab. Log off, and when you come back, put on what you purchased and see how it “fits.” For one thing, it trains your eye to pick out items complimentary in contrast quickly but also it helps you to learn and remember your inventory, which I think is a key to any successful modeling career. Think of it as your own personal quick style contest and you are always the winner! I wanted to go casual so I could show the spectrum of goodies at Bliss Couture and fell instantly in love with these groovy NuNu bell bottom jeans. The second item I purchased was this exquisite Jennifer Ruffles Bolero in the most scrumptious shade of purple. That was all she wrote. I teamed the outfit with jewelry from Mandala <3, and a watch from Ryca. I recently read in a fashion magazine that corsets were the rage this season, so I pulled out one from my constant companion, Angel Dessous. Grabbed my purse from Baiastice and my hairs were lovingly coiffed at Boon. And the finished look is one I would proudly wear to any casual event where I log in, throw something on and show up. Its hip, it’s fun, and I like the kicky “dressy messy” feel of the entire ensemble.

As a contrast, this gown was my bridesmaids dress for the wedding of Federica and Jace. The color is gorgeous, the skirt mermaid styled with “tail-feathered” accenting in the back. The shimmery color blocking accentuates a womanly waist and the sleeveless bodice has a soft and sexy feathery concoction to frame the lovely face of its wearer. I topped with a simply do from Vanity Hair and done. Included in this pic, is the Ophelia Mink shrug, proudly worn on the mannequin. See? Bliss Couture changes anyone’s outlook.

But don’t take my word for it, check out Bliss Couture, Amutey is one of the best for a reason, I know she has something created just for you too. And I can stand on this promise, because in my run through, I saw men’s wear as well! <3 Taxi:
