It’s raining on and off today so that must mean Spring is right around the corner. I love Spring, I think it like taking out a drab rug and shaking out the bits of debris and dust that have accumulated over the winter. It’s Spring, so soon we will have a lot of new pretties to wear. I am hoping for a mesh bikini in Pantone’s color of the season, emerald green. *Hint* My friend Kallisto Destiny of Drift has started to put out her fresh new looks for Spring and boy do they put me in a beach state of mind. All of these outfits come with a Color HUD so you have at the very least 5 colors in each outfit. So what are you waiting for? Go get them! I’m so nice I even included the taxi for you! Taxi: All other LM’s should be on my “Last known SLURL’s” page, if not just give me a call.

As for me, I am going to wander away for the day, rainy days just somehow mean time to shop for me, and I’ve some Spring buying to do.

Odd occurrence of late, in the past week, three different models asked me if I could teach them how to style. Odd, first of all, because I’ve never held the delusion that I had any style a’tall. I am after all, just a silly Cao with rather eclectic tastes in fashion. Secondly, I’ve always been under the assumption that style couldn’t be learned, that you either have it, or you don’t. The rest of us just muddle on through the best we can. But I thought about it over night and here are some ideas that have worked for me.

The first is very important, and also why I became a blogger for consumer’s instead of designers. There are a lot of very stylish outfits out there, but if you don’t personally like them, you aren’t going to pull the look off effectively. My regular readers probably remember the times I’ve said, I don’t normally wear gowns, but I love this one. Well no truer statement could be made, I feel in gowns, the gown is wearing me, I become a mannequin to the outfit, more or less. Don’t get me wrong, I would never wear an outfit to blog that I didn’t love, I just think if I had my druthers I would show my style in another way. The gown isn’t a bad thing, it’s just not my personal “style.” So the most important step to learning how to style, is learning the type of clothing you like, so the clothes you wear become an expression of your personality.

The second biggest step, is to learn about style. I live in a podunk drinking village with a fishing problem, so the modicum of style is typically jeans, bathing suits, foots or flip-flops. It makes for easy morning wardrobe decisions, but it’s not exactly going to land anyone on the “best dressed list” of any publication. So study. Peruse fashion magazines, google pictures on fashion, check out the fashion shows and fashion weeks on YouTube and find out whats new, what’s in, and what’s not. Stylish is a commitment to rise above average, so it takes a little bit of work. I actually keep a bit of a “fashion scrapbook” with ideas to try, things to look for, that way if I get stuck for a style, I have immediate inspiration at my fingertips. (I use Pinterest for this)

The next one may seem kind of silly for an avatar, but know when clothes “fit” you. Nothing could be truer at this point with the introduction of so many mesh products on the market. As an Asian, I am thinner than most models and as you know, most mesh comes with lots of curves. Rather than getting into a viscious cycle of changing my shape, I specifically look for slimmer cuts, with more reasonable layers. Otherwise I look like I am wearing a burlap sack.

I want to put the next two thoughts here because they work with each other. Know how to put outfits together. You can have a lot of really cool single pieces but together they don’t necessarily mean style. Frankly, sometimes they look like you threw stuff at yourself and it just stuck. Back it off some and always look at yourself critically. Know what colors play nicely together, know what colors work well with your skin tone. Don’t assume that since your are an avatar the seasonal color charts don’t apply to you, they still do, very much so. See “Runway Modeling-color wheel by Mimmi Boa” page on the left for more info on this. The second hand of this concept is, don’t limit yourself to “brand” names. The brand names designers have become base points for a good reason, their items are consistently good, but there are a lot of other designers out there with great items as well. I commented to one of these friends last week to not “throw” an outfit on. Put it on piece by piece and remember its pieces because oft, you can take simple elements of one outfit and combine with another and it can have some amazing results. It’s like you get to be the designer without the labor of creating the pieces. But watch the colors, not all blacks or reds are created equally, and that spells fashion disaster.

Last and certainly not least important, accessorize! It can make a great outfit one worthy of a top model. However, understand, having a ton of jewelry on does not make an outfit stylish. Know how much is too much, is the outfit in need of a bold statement or just a complimentary touch up? Do you really need a hat or is the hairstyle the focal piece? Sometimes the accessory or lack thereof is the most profound statement a model can make.

Take from? Of course! Get crazy and creative and build your style around you! This is what I mean about style can’t be taught, you either get it or you don’t. You have to learn it by learning about you first and no one knows you quite as well as you do!

Drift.Away.

Drift.Away.

I had a pretty calm Sunday today. I have been half arsed decorating for Christmas and at the same time adding an addition and porch to my SL house, so today was a drift away day. Really no obligations to fulfill. I did attend the Passion Fashion Academy graduation and congratulations to all of those models, you did awesome! But other than that, this morning I sat around for a little bit and savored a nice cup or twelve of coffee. I had a couple of pics of some new Drift items from Kallisto Destiny that I shot last weekend, but when I saw the above pants “Apartment” pants, I couldn’t resist throwing them in, they are so me! Won’t be taking them off anytime soon, so expect to see a lot of me in them!

As a little aside, I want to thank the designer’s who do send me things now and then to consider, I truly appreciate it. I purchase most of the items I blog, so I am very grateful when I receive a little prezzy. I do want to say though, if it takes me just a little longer than you expect to blog them please know, its not that I do not like them, because I do, I Do! I just tend not to blog one designer or another, since I am retired, I like to create outfits from multiple designers, so sometimes I have to stop my brain from creating looks in my head long enough to shoot them, but also I often have real life and Second Life obligations I have to fulfill. But I try, I honestly do, to be consistent. So thank you all, always, for your patience.

Channeling.Charlie.

Channeling.Charlie. Amazing pose by Del May <3

I oft wonder if it would be amazing to be one of those really famous people? You know the ones, not these current hollywood types who make their names by being more and more outrageously bad in behavior. No, I wouldn’t want to be known for anything like that, they are all too generic these days. I mean someone who 35 years after his death, if you saw a picture of him, or even just a pose, you’d know that’s Charlie Chaplin! I can’t say I’ve ever even seen one of his moving pictures honestly. But he has been often imitated, just because of his “face value.” I just wonder, do you think its possible to live right, be honest and kind and still be famous? Or has notoriously bad replaced famous in modern culture? Hmm, sad, but seeing how many in Hollywood act, perhaps it has. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if most of the movies we are force-fed these days were the silent type? Not a soapbox comment, just a quiet observation.

As an aside, Shay Sibrian and Jade Art of Celoe are just amazing at making mesh products, especially jackets. Even though I do not blog them all, I do wear them. I think I have bought them all in fact. If your looking to update the winter wardrobe, its a great place to check out! I enjoyed the SIM, Mayfair (ala Central London), and the store so much, I’ve included the hackney carriage for ya. Taxi:

Voice.For.The.Silent. 2Lei

Voice.For.The.Silent.

2Lei is a collaborative project between different groups in Second Life, born in 2010 with the aim to raise awareness and disseminate events related to the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women”. It is embraced by virtual artists, gallery owners, musicians and culture personalities of Second Life sharing a common message of solidarity to the women through their particular art.

“2Lei” is a variety of virtual teams in a traveling event between different spaces, with a very broad participation, and if we consider that an island can support up to 100 avatars, we can say we have been able to reach this limit for each of the events presented, with participation of users, not only Italians, but also from several international Countries. “2Lei” project, thanks to this virtual event, has the potential for more people to collaborate and meet, even at a distance of the space of the Earth, to pursue a single intention, awareness. Also this year, for the third edition and with great anticipation, we will be sharing the different events over several days, from 19th to 25th November.

Between November 19th and 25th, we shall speak, we shall commemorate, we shall stand in celebration of women. All women. But especially for the women of no voice who suffer needlessly at the hands of another. For our final event on the 25th November (time to be determined) we want to have a runway show of the “anonymous women’s designers.” The show encompasses the Yin and Yang forces of life. Relative levels of Yin Yang are continuously changing ebbing and flowing in life. Normally this is a harmonious change, but when Yin or Yang are out of balance they affect each other, and too much of one can eventually weaken (consume) the other. Let’s stand for those consumed in this elemental force of nature.

We hope you will join us! Are you willing to join us? Designers will just need to provide one black or one white outfit for the show. Models will just have to donate their time to walk in the show. So easy, yet so powerful. If you will help, please contact Caoimhe Lionheart or Draakje Dailey so we can kindly add you as participating anonymous designers or models. We are standing up to the bully with the fists, the evil person with the verbal weapons, won’t you stand with us?

All.My.Dreams.Come.True.When.I.Wear.A.Sweater.

drift cozy sweater boatneck sweater and diva yuri3

Okay, Okay, well maybe not that itchy wool type my mama made me wear growing up, but to me, nothing is finer on a lazy Sunday then to pull on a bulky cotton sweater and a comfy low waisted non-binding denim skirt. I mean, think about it, in Florida, especially near the beach where the salty ocean breeze makes things stay a little warmer than inland, sweaters are about it for the year. So I was really excited to see my friend Kallisto Destiny of Drift came out with an outfit that truly mimics what I pull on for long comfortable weekends in the real. The sweater is boatnecked so you don’t feel like you are choking and it gives it a nice feminine peek of shoulder, the long denim skirt has pockets for the miscellaneous minutae like driver’s license, car keys and maybe a credit card. Always need one of those in case you drive by a sale, right? Best part? She offers it in so many colors you can mix and match all winter long! So open a bottle of wine, grab the fruit, cheese and crackers and enjoy a comfortable day with a few friends, in this outfit your certainly dressed for it.

As an aside, for those “other” days, filled with meetings and *sigh* work. Drift has the Mutiara Dress, also available in many colors. It is safe enough for work and yet feminine and elegant enough for semi-formal events. If you get a chance, check out Drift today. Kalli always designs something young, fun and created for all styles and tastes. And for those loyal “Drifters” a little sneaky information, Drift will be one of the newest designers in the next round of the Couturier’s Dock. So get ready for some awesome additions to our inventory!
