I don’t know about you, but I am getting pretty sick of the National News. For several years now every night it’s the same thing. Have you noticed lately how news events are always “looming” or “imminent”? The date the government is going to shutdown is looming closer and closer. A decision about going to war with Syria is brewing on the horizon. A depression or recession is about to rear its ugly head. My mum always told me not to “borrow worry.” Some days I half wish the horrible predicted chit would just happen all at once so we could just call it a day and move on to a brighter future. But then, remember, I am also the person who thinks electing a divorced mother with 3 kids who knows how to balance her checkbook (stopping at zero) while taking care of her children is the way to solve the current crisis with the senate and congress. Besides, I was always taught to be careful what you wish for. (because you just might get it). So if you find a certain amount of angst with living in uncertain times, there are a few tips we can live by.

Pay close attention to your intention. Intention is fundamental in governing what we do and why we do it, even subconsciously. So in essence if we set our goal, our intention, to a positive aspiration, say happiness, we are more likely to succeed. If we decide we are going to live in terror over one of these “looming” happenings, we most certainly will live in terror, whether the looming event happens or not. When you hear, or fear something, go ahead, play it out and imagine the worst. Let’s say your worst fear is losing your job, you can imagine you’d probably have to take a part time one, at least temporarily, maybe sell your house, or find a roommate and though it is a big adjustment, playing it out at least puts it in perspective. Now that you have your nightmare, and some ways to cope if it does come true, how does it make you feel? Is it really the end of the world? Probably not and actually it could open the door to explore what you really want to do when you “grow up.” And this doesn’t even have to be about something as sterile as a job, I’ve been vacillating over the fear and anxiety of my impending surgery backwards and forwards and we all know one possible, though usually slight outcome to any type of surgery, but by preparing myself I feel a little better about facing down the fear.
The take from? These are anxious times, and if life’s darkness is looming imminently on your horizon, stare the fears in the face and learn from them. Make yourself become comfortable with being out of control, because honestly, our control was always just an illusion anyway, we never really had it in the first place. Develop an inner belief that everything will be okay because in the words of Barbara Jordan, “ For all of its uncertainty we cannot flee the future.” Come ‘ell or high water, it’s gonna get here all the same. Well that’s my take on it anyway. As an aside, I see lunch looming on my horizon, y’all have a great day!
