You have to get out of your own way. Asking yourself the right questions, can have a life altering effect on your outcome. When making a tough decision, whether it’s who you will marry, or honestly even just what to eat for dinner, taking a moment to ask “could the outcome of this (whatever you are deciding) be better than it currently is” oft makes us focus long enough on ourselves that we realize, indeed it can, and perhaps what we have chosen is not what we should “settle” on. If failure wasn’t possible, would you decide the same way? I think I’ve missed a lot of opportunities in my life because I feared failure, and the sad part is there really is no such thing. Businesses fail, not people. A failure is an omission of occurrence or performance, i.e. the failure to pay rent on time, but when it comes to humans we are more likely to suffer deficiencies not failures. For example, I wanted to be married by 30 but didn’t quite make it. Am I a failure, nah, not at all. Why? Because I didn’t settle, I chose to think about it a while longer, asked myself the right question (what makes me happy) and realized marriage isn’t necessary for happiness. Don’t we owe it to ourselves to live our best possible life? An examined life? It’s the shortfalls and mistakes that keep us striving, creating, and innovating. I read somewhere less than 10% of Cezanne’s paintings bear his signature and some art historians theorized this was because he was never fully satisfied with them. Were they failures, not at all, they are still his and still collected, cherished and studied.

The take from? Life’s funny, we spend it worrying so much about what others would think, letting other’s opinion’s be the catalyst for the choices we make. So the take from, I suppose, is none of us has control over how we will be remembered. Every life is a fusion of time, opportunity, choices and decisions. It’s impossible to know what moments, what foibles, what successes will come to define us once we are gone. So the best we can do is live our lives fully, be authentically ourselves, and trust that the right things about us, the best most cherishing things about us, will echo in the memories that endure as our legacy to our loved ones. Of course, anybody who believes all that has never sat through the rehashing of “Cao stories” that goes on around our Thanksgiving dinner table, but that’s just my wooden nickel on it, probably not worth the time it took to read it.
